Haymitch Abernathy is quite the legend in the “Hunger Games” universe. A jaded mentor turned revolutionary, brought to life on the big screen by a classic performance by Woody Harrelson, and not to mention his legendary yet unknown exploits from his days as a tribute—Haymitch may not have been the series’ protagonist, but he surely was among the readers’ favorites.
“Sunrise on the Reaping,” Suzanne Collins’s fifth installment to the acclaimed book series, follows Haymitch Abernathy and casts light on the events surrounding the 50th Hunger Games—more widely known as the Second Quarter Quell.
It is said that for “every twenty-five years the anniversary would be marked by a Quarter Quell. It would call for a glorified version of the Games to make fresh the memory of those killed by the districts’ rebellion.” In “Catching Fire,” that meant collecting all the previous victors and having them fight for their lives once again. During the 50th anniversary, that called for doubling the total number of tributes—making it the bloodiest in the history of the games.

In an exclusive with People, Collins shared an excerpt from Chapter One of the highly-anticipated prequel.

Third, his mother, aged 35 at the time, was widowed early after his father died in a coal mine fire. Fourth, he has a beloved named Lenore Dove.

But as disclosed in the books, these key figures in Abernathy’s life were all killed by President Snow following his victory at the games. Why? Because he pulled a stunt that the president viewed as an act of defiance—similar to Katniss’ use of Nightlock berries at the end of the first book.

“In the last few weeks, as the Fiftieth Hunger Games has drawn closer, these sounds have become more frequent, much like the anxious thoughts I work hard to keep at bay. The second Quarter Quell. So don’t feed the nightmares. Don’t let yourself panic. Don’t give the Capitol that. They’ve taken enough already.”
